The ANU Philippines Project will foster world-class research, policy analysis, and bilateral collaborations across seven core themes by working to develop stronger research practices, scholarly exchanges and deeper research-to-policy engagement.

Project Mission and Vision (2024-2028)

  • Deepening bilateral ties between Australia and the Philippines through stronger institutional and people-to-people research links
  • Supporting Philippine domestic and Australian foreign policymaking and reform in critical areas informed by relevant, high-quality policy research and analysis

The priority research areas are:

  1. Strategic studies and foreign policy;
  2. Economic resilience;
  3. Gender, women’s empowerment and peace;
  4. The ongoing pursuit of peace, development and political stability in Mindanao;
  5. Other threats to stability such as climate change, food insecurity and the energy crisis;
  6. Rule of law, human rights and judicial governance; and
  7. Governance, politics and political communications.

To contribute to the overarching goals, the Philippines Project will focus on two program pillars:

Pillar 1. Stronger Philippines Research Partnerships and Practices – this will see stronger linkages and networks between Australian and Philippines-based academics and policymakers, between academic institutions, and with relevant interest groups.

Pillar 2. Better Informed Policymakers - this will see policymakers in the Philippines and Australia have increased access to, and be influenced by, relevant, high quality policy research and analysis.

The Philippines Project is supported by funding from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
