Call for Expression of Interest

The ANU Philippines Institute invites PhD candidates and early career researchers (ECRs) based in Australia to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the PhD and ECR Workshop, to be held on 9 November 2026 at The Australian National University in Canberra. The workshop is held the day before the 2026 Philippines Update ("Sama-sama: The Philippines with Australia in a changing world").

The workshop is open to eligible PhD candidates and ECRs across Australia. It aims to bring together emerging scholars whose research engages with the Philippines, and to strengthen connections among the next generation of Philippines researchers in Australia. Funding support is available for up to 12 interstate participants; Canberra-based applicants are welcome to attend but are not eligible for funding.

Eligibility:

  • PhD candidates enrolled at an Australian institution
  • Early Career Researchers (ECRs) within five years of PhD conferral, based in Australia
  • Willing to contribute to a special issue of Doing Philippine Studies in Australia

Funding:
Funding of up to AUD 800 per participant is available for 12 interstate participants to support expenses associated with attending the PhD and ECR Workshop and the 2026 Philippines Update, including travel and accommodation.

Send the following documents to Philippines.Institute@anu.edu.au from your institutional email address, with the subject line "Application_PhD and ECR Workshop_[LAST NAME]_[FIRST NAME]":

  • A Word document with your name, institution, discipline, career stage (PhD year or years since conferral), home region in the Philippines, a 100-word research summary, a 100-word statement of interest in the workshop, and whether you can attend the 2026 Philippines Update
  • A Word document outlining your funding need (interstate applicants only)
  • A CV of up to 2 pages
  • Submit by the EOI deadline: 9 October 2026
